Sustainability Workshops

Posted on Tuesday, Nov 19, 2019
In the past few years I’ve been to many of the workshops offered by the Office of Sustainability. They cover a variety of topics related to the three pillars of sustainability: social sustainability, environmental sustainability, and economic sustainability. These workshops are student-run, open to everyone, and you get a free CamelBak water bottle with TAMU Sustainability logo on it every time (makes great gift for your friends and families).

I always encourage my friends to attend these workshops because of several reasons. First, the content of these workshops are easy to understand. Even if you’re not an environmental science or related major, you can fully understand the important of the issues and what measures you can take to help solve the problem. Coming from a humanities and social science background, I felt I learned new things and ways I can contribute to sustainability from every workshop.

Second, the workshop content was basically research done by the students. These students are Office of Sustainability interns that work on doing outreach and educating their fellow Aggies about these important issues. Although as graduate students we won’t be the interns, you can always encourage the undergraduate students in your class to go to the workshop and learn the possibility to become a sustainability intern. (For more on the internship program, see: http://sustainability.tamu.edu/Employment.aspx)

Last but not least, the reusable water bottles are made of a higher grade plastic. You can use the free water bottle you got from these Sustainability workshops for hydration and refill at many on-campus locations. If you remember seeing some of the water fountains having a number on its little screen saying “how many number of one-time use plastic water bottle you helped to eliminate”, that’s your positive impact on our environment. You can also give it as a gift to encourage people to switch to reusable water bottles.

This coming week, the workshops will touch topics such as sustainable cities, environmental injustice, labor ethics, and reducing your carbon footprint. You can follow the Office of Sustainability’s Facebook page @TAMUsustainability for updated information. Here is the schedule and location:
