Howdy!

Happy Black History Month! I hope your spring semester is off to a wonderful start. Black History Month is an annual commemoration of the achievements and challenges of African Americans throughout American history, including the civil rights movement and our innovative, cultural, and political successes. Black History Month is observed during the month of February to provide education and enlightenment about people of African origin and cultures.

During the month of February, I strongly encourage you to take advantage of the numerous Black History Month events organized by a variety of student groups. Visit the Department of Multicultural Services' Black History Month page for a comprehensive list. Check your inbox for the official Texas A&M University Black History Month calendar which will be distributed around campus with the help and support of the Black Student Alliance Council (BSAC).

The Black Graduate Students’ Association will also host several events on campus. We will kick-off Black History Month with our book club, where we will be reading Rest in Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey, followed by a Black History Month Edition of Family Feud. We will conclude the month with our "Black Trailblazers: Notable Aggies in the Ivory" panel discussion, featuring current and former Black Professional Aggies! For more information, please connect with us at bgsa.tamu@gmail.com or on social media (@TAMUBGSA on Instagram and Twitter).

Black History Month is a time to reflect on, appreciate, and celebrate an influential culture's history. Use this month as a learning opportunity and a reminder of why diversity is vital to our education because understanding and respecting various cultures leads to greater acceptance of one another. Best wishes this semester, and keep up the fantastic work!

Thanks and Gig 'Em,
